For Schelling, primordial knowledge itself is equivalent to intellectual intuition. Such knowledge is identical with its object, as the subject becomes aware of itself. Gottfried Leibniz established the modern formulation of identity, stipulating that x is the same as y if and only if every predicate true of x is true of y as well. Of course, truth is just as slippery as equivalence.
